According to a government statement, to which VerAngola had access, this intention was expressed by Carl Skau, deputy executive director and head of Operations at WFP, during a meeting with the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Téte António, held this Friday, in Antalya (Türkiye).

In this way, the WFP "expressed its desire to cooperate with the Republic of Angola, in its capacity as acting President of the African Union, on issues of food and nutritional security", reads the note, which adds that "similarly, the WFP intends to work together with Angola to mobilise resources to support African states affected by challenges resulting from conflicts that still persist in some regions of the continent".

Thus, Skau reaffirmed the entity's commitment to strengthening collaboration with Angola.

"Carl Skau reiterated the organization's commitment to strengthening its collaboration with the Angolan Government, within the bilateral framework, as well as in the broader context of the Angolan presidency of the African Union, in order to develop structured responses to food insecurity problems and to support stabilization and development efforts on the African continent," the note states.

In turn, Téte António welcomed the WFP's intention and "highlighted the importance of adopting a continental and coordinated approach, aimed at strengthening food systems, community resilience, and mitigating the impacts of humanitarian crises".

The minister also referred to the "strategic role of WFP in implementing programs in Angola, particularly in provinces with higher levels of food vulnerability, where there are significant gains from the actions of this United Nations agency."

"The two diplomats also discussed the need to establish more effective resource mobilization mechanisms, based on a transparent and sustainable partnership, based on the priorities defined by the member states of the African Union, with a view to promoting a unified African response to food emergencies," the statement reads.

WFP was created in 1961 and is the United Nations agency responsible for combating hunger and promoting food security worldwide.
