The National Weather Service of Papua New Guinea has reissued a heavy rain and flood warning for several parts of the country.

The areas under alert, according to the Weather Service, include:

  • Western Province
  • Gulf Province
  • Parts of Central Province
  • East Sepik Province
  • West Sepik Province
  • Parts of Morobe Province
  • Madang Province
  • New Britain
  • The Highlands Region

The persistent heavy rainfall poses a significant threat of both riverine and flash flooding in these identified areas within the next 12 to 24 hours.

The National Weather Service is urging all residents residing in the warned communities to take all necessary precautionary measures during this warning period to ensure their safety and protect their property.

According to the weather advisory, the current weather conditions are attributed to a trough line extending south-eastward from the PNG/Indonesian border, approximately at (7.30°S, 140.0°E), across Western Province to the Gulf of Papua and the Coral Sea. This trough further extends along the National Capital District/Port Moresby region to Tufi/Wanigella and into the northern Milne Bay Islands/southern Solomon Sea, eventually leading into a clockwise circulation over the west coast of the Solomon Islands at approximately (08.2°S, 156.4°E).
